"Polk County Woman Died at 91, Leaving 251 Living Descendants"

Benton, Tenn., Aug. 12 -- Of unusual interest is the life story of the late Mrs. Mary Jane Woody of Polk County, who passed away July 3 at the age of 91.  Her descendants number 304, with 251 now living.  She had 13 children, 86 grandchildren, 171 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Woody was Mary Jane Jenkins, born May 3, 1852, daughter of Alexander and Sarah Jenkins of Polk County.  She was married to James Woody at the age of 18.  She joined the Springtown Baptist Church at the age of 13 and remained a member of the church until her death 78 years later.

Mrs. Woody's son, the Rev. John A. Woody of Benton, tells many interesting stories his mother related concerning early life and the experiences of the family, especially during the War Between the States.  She often spoke of the scarcity of salt during that period and said her parents boiled drippings from the meat in the smokehouse in order to secure a small amount of salt.

Mr. Woody said his mother frequently of a trip she and her husband, her husband's brother and his wife made to Arkansas.  The long journey was made in a wagon drawn by a yoke of oxen.  Six weeks were required for making the journey, the travelers resting on Sundays.  She said the men frequently left the camp and went out into the forest in search of wild game for food.  The women remaining in camp kept the hunters aware of their location by blowing a conkshell at intervals.  Their stay in Arkansas continued 14 months, the family returning to Polk County by the same mode of travel and in practically the same length of time.

After her husband's death in 1933, Mrs. Woody resided with her son, W.A. Woody, at Reliance until her death last month.  Funeral services were held at Four Mile Church in Polk County and burial was in the church cemetery.
