Hypothermi First Aid
Knowing what to do in both types of hypothermia, Mild and/or Severe can save your life or anothers.
We have been warned for centuries, "Nature Will Turn Against You," by God's Holy Mother. Many holy saints for over 14 centuries have foretold of bitter cold, unlike anything we can imagine, and extremely hot weather. These changes may be sudden or quick, and in places that normally do not have such a climate. We may see cold where it is hot, and hot where it is cold.
Or, they may even alternate. There will be rain where there is usually scant or no rain, and vice-versa.
Mild Hypothermia
- Remove immediately from further cold or exposure.
- Remove wet clothing.
- Rewarm by covering with dry blankets, sleeping bag, anything--even a warm human body.
- Place hot packs about head, neck, groin, and along sides of chest.
- Avoid alcoholic or caffeine beverages.
- Avoid herbal stimulants.
- Give warm milk, soup (broth) or other fluids--not hot.
- Remove patient (victim) to emergency medical care immediately.
Major or Severe Hypothermia
- If patient is unconscious or stiff, try re-warming; then get medical attention immediately by professionals.
- Rewarm only if patient is out of reach of paramedics or medical facilities; otherwise, let them do it. Get victim (patient) to professional help immediately.
- Avoid stimulating circulation by rubbing patient's extremities. Doing so will only move the COLD sluggish blood to patient's body core and possibly bring on cardiac arrest.
- As opposed to the modality or treatment for shock victims, do not raise the legs. This will only over work the stressed heart and could bring on cardiac arrest.
- Remember! Victims often appear dead--DO NOT administer CPR. This could stop the heart.
- Remove the victim to medical-care facilities. Remember, in most warm climates, the staff is often not prepared to handle COLD victims. You may have to tell them, much to their consternation, what to do.
They should have manuals for this sort of emergency. I have read of cases where they were unprepared. Keep this sheet with you when The Chastisement begins; or on a hunting trip, etc. in cold weather.
- When transporting the victim, handle in such a manner such that he is not massaged or his extremeties or body stimulated. HANDLE GENTLY. ROUGH HANDLING MAY KILL!
