STILL MORE SPYWARE POSSIBLY ON YOUR COMPUTER !

The following is a quote from part of the information at:
http://grc.com/downloaders.htm
"If you use the RealNetworks RealDownload, Netscape/AOL Smart Download, or NetZip Download Demon utilities . . .
EVERY TIME you use one of these utilities to download ANY FILE from ANYWHERE on the Internet, the complete "URL address" of the file, along with YOUR computer's individual Internet IP address, and a UNIQUE ID TAG that has been assigned to YOUR machine, is immediately (and secretly) transmitted to the program's publisher.
This allows a database of your entire, personal, file download history to be assembled and uniquely associated with your individual computer . . . for whatever purpose the program's publishers may have today, or tomorrow.

ADVERT.DLL - INTERNET SPY OR HOAX?
UPDATED 7/10

There has been a controversary for the past few weeks about a DLL file that over 300 software programs install on a user's computer. Some reputable "experts" claim that it is a "spy" program, sending information to a software publisher, or central repository. Others claim that it is "much ado about nothing".
It should be noted that a new version of the software is called "Radiant".

ANOTHER EXCELLENT SPAM FIGHTING TOOL

We have had a lot of discussions on the show about SPAM, also called "Unsolicited Commercial Email". There is another FREE service (registration required) that may be effective at reducing SPAM. I am currently using it.

SPAM COP

With SPAM COP, you copy the entire SPAM mail, INCLUDING HEADERS, into SPAM COP. I like seeing it do the checking, and find it humerous, but not surprising, that headers on SPAM are often phoney. SPAM COP can usually get through the false and forged headers, and send an "abuse" complaint to the proper place.

WINDOWS CRITICAL UPDATE - NOT REALLY NECESSARY

I have received several emails from listeners about having "Windows Critical Update" running on their computers as often as every 5 minutes! This is TOTALLY unnecessary, and a waste of system resources. I researched this, and found the following references:

Problem: Task scheduler won't stop running at startup
Did you install the windows critical update notification program?
That will start the scheduler as that is how it is run.
You need to uninstall or disable the critical update notification program to stop the task scheduler.

To disable the critical update notification program you need to click start / run and key msconfig and click OK.
On the dialog box that opens, click on the startup tab.
Locate the entry for CriticalUpdate and remove the check from the check box next to it and click OK or Apply to save any changes.
NOTE: THIS IS THE SAME PROCEDURE USED TO STOP any UNWANTED PROGRAM FROM STARTING AT BOOT-UP

If prompted to restart, click on No.
Double click on the task scheduler icon in the task bar.
On the window that opens, click on the menu advanced | stop using task scheduler.
You can then close the window.
This should stop the task scheduler from running.

-------------------------------
ALSO:
Microsoft's Windows Critical Update Notification program is an example of an application that can make a web request every five minutes, 24 hours a day. If you install Windows Critical Update Notification, we suggest that you change the schedule that this program uses in the Task Scheduler in the tooltray at the bottom right of your screen.

Microsoft advise you not to change the default schedule, so you may prefer to uninstall Windows Critical Update Notification from Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

YOU MAY WANT TO DISABLE VBS SCRIPTS ON YOUR COMPUTER

Many of the new virii and trojans now being widely disseminated are based on "visual basic scripts" or "VBS".
MOST computer users do NOT need VBS running on their computer.
You can prevent future outbreaks from affecting your Windows 98 and 2000 system by disabling your Windows Scripting Host. To turn VBS off on your computer:

1.Click the START button
2.Select SETTINGS
3.Choose CONTROL PANEL
4.Double-click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM icon
5.Select the WINDOWS SETUP tab
6.Highlight ACCESSORIES and click on the DETAILS button
7.Scroll down to WINDOWS SCRIPTING HOST and uncheck the box
8.Click OK
9.Click APPLY

CLEAN UP YOUR STARTUP

We have had several on air discussions about cleaning up the "START UP" procedure.
The removal of unnecessary files from your start up can speed your computer as well as reduce the number of conflicts and run errors. In Windows 98, there is a built in utility that can do this. It can be found (WIN 98 only !) at START - RUN - type MSCONFIG - then OK. Click on the top-right tab "START UP" and uncheck any unwanted files.
While MSCONFIG is lacking in Windows 95, there is an excellent shareware utility that will work with Win 95. 98, and NT.
It is "StartEd" from Outer Technologies, and can be downloaded directly from the publisher at:
http://www.outertech.com/english/products/started/started.html

INTEL RECALLS SOME CHIPSETS

May, 2000

Intel has found some boards using the MTH (memory translator hub) may be sensitive to system noise under extreme conditions, and this issue may manifest itself in intermittent system reboots or system hangs during operation. This noise sensitivity may result in data loss and/or corruption.

STILL MORE HOAXES

Updated March 20

The "MAKE-A-WISH Foundation does NOT receive 7c for every email you forward ...details:
MAKE-A-WISH BATTLES BOGUS E-MAIL

There is NO SUCH THING as EMAIL TRACKING which has been alleged to everything from donations to MAKE-A-WISH, to free clothes from the GAP, to $1000 from Bill Gates.
PLEASE do NOT forward emails that reference "FREE" or "DONATIONS" for each email forwarded.

Still ANOTHER email tracking HOAX has sprung up !. If you get an email that says:
EMI-Time Warner
Due to the merger between EMI and Time Warner announced yesterday, an unprecendented opportunity to make FREE money and receive FREE gifts has arisen. As you have probably heard, Time Warner recently announced a merger with AOL.
AOL is the world's largest Internet Service Provider, and is eager to increase it's market share by providing a Unique Selling Point.
Time Warner, AOL and EMI have begun to conduct a feasability study in music delivery via email, and so are collating data on the way in which emails are disseminated between family, collegues and friends.
AOL has cleverly encoded this email with a unique identifier, which allows them to track all the senders and recipients.
THIS IS ANOTHER OF THE "OLD" EMAIL TRACKING HOAXES !
PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE !

The "GREAT AMERICAN GAS OUT" is another URBAN LEGEND / HOAX / JUNK email; details:

Please STOP forwarding the HOAX "It takes guts to say Jesus".

An almost identically worded hoax "How to Give a Cat a Colonic" is also currently making the rounds.

An email HOAX that has become a self-fullfilling prophecy is now making the rounds.
The ORIGINAL HOAX ON "HEY YOU" says:
IF YOU GET AN EMAIL TITLED "HEY YOU" DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY!!! EVEN IF IT IS FROM SOMEBODY YOU KNOW!!! IT IS A VIRUS THAT WILL OVER THE PROCESS OF 7 DAYS SEND ITSELF OUT TO EVERYBODY IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK AND THEN PROCEED TO DESTROY YOUR HARD DRIVE AND YOUR MODEM....

This email is a HOAX; HOWEVER someone has taken this well documented HOAX, and added a REAL TROJAN/VIRUS to it!
This TROJAN/VIRUS is designed to steal AOL passwords. Details:
HEY YOU memory resident AOL password stealing Trojan

A LOT of other HOAXES are making the rounds along with the KFC HOAX,
the POST OFFICE EMAIL TAX HOAX,
and almost all of the other "...send this to everyone you know ..." types of messages.

Another OLD HOAX is again clogging up my bandwidth, which more than one listener has claimed is fact. This is the JANET RENO - CULTIST HOAX. If you get this, please do NOT forward it to everyone in your church, address book, etc, as it is a HOAX. Janet Reno made NO SUCH STATEMENT ON "60 Minutes" ! Details: JANET RENO - CULTIST HOAX

Now, I am being swarmed with another HOAX
about contaminated BANANAS. Her are the details on this BANANA HOAX:

FREE FIREWALL

With all of the recent news about denial of service attacks, trojans, hackers, etc., there has been much discussion about online security. While anti-virus programs that are CURRENT AND UP TO DATE are good, they do NOT stop most of the ways that a hacker can penetrate your system. This is the function of a "firewall". There are many decent firewall products available, but now there is a FREE fire wall available. It has had mixed reviews, as it is an early version, and requires FREQUENT UPDATING just as ALL other firewalls do, but it is al leeast FREE. A FIREWALL is ESPECIALLY important on systems connected via DSL or CABLE, as these are "always on" arrangements.

IS YOUR COMPUTER COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 2000 ?
GOOD CHANCE NOT !

With a great deal of advertising and hype, Microsoft is about to start the public roll out of its much discussed WINDOWS 2000.

While it will have substantial improvements and new features compared to WIN 95/98, there have already been a multitude of reports of MAJOR problems with WINDOWS 2000.

One of the most disturbing is that WIN2000 will NOT work with many (most ?) of the hardware drivers written for WIN 95/98. In order to minimize the impact of the problem, WIN2000 will run a diagnostic BEFORE it will install to identify your hardware, and notify the user if there are problems. Simply put, if your hardware is NOT listed on the WIN2000 CD, there is a very good chance that it will NOT work!

Microsoft has made the utility that does the compatibility testing for WIN2000 available for FREE download at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/upgrade/compat/ready.asp

If you are considering upgrading to WINDOWS 2000, I STRONGLY advise that you download the Microsoft utility above and test your system FIRST. There may be NO NEED to upgrade YET if your hardware is NOT Win2000 compatible.

EMAILS ABOUT CONGRESS CRITTERS' PECCADILLOS

I have recently received several versions of emails from listeners alleging that many of the congress critters have less than "ideal" morals, and a history of "legal infractions".
I researched the claims, and found the original source, which is a Washington, DC, newsletter, "Capitol Hill Blue".
The "Blue" published a 5 part series last summer "documenting" (alleging) a list of congressional improprieties.
The first of the 5 parts of the series (with links to the subsequent parts) is at:

COMPAQ PRESARIO LOCKUPS

According to a recent report on ZDNET,
"Frozen Presario 5800 series PCs are leaving a number of Compaq Computer Corp. customers frustrated"

The freeze forces users to shut down and reboot, sometimes by pressing the machine's power button or unplugging it.
"It's a known problem and we've been proactive in addressing it," said Compaq spokeswoman Hedy Baker."
The root of the problem, according to Compaq Tech support personnel, appears to be in Windows operating system settings and how the PC's system resources are utilized.
Compaq consequently created a FAQ, or frequently asked questions sheet, for "Lockups on Presario Models." The FAQ, called FAQ3555, is posted on the Compaq support Web site. (The site can be found at

WINALIGN
Something That *Will* Definitely Help Speed Windows
WinAlign and MapCache are Microsoft tools "designed to optimize the performance of executable code (binaries) on the Windows 98 platform." WinAlign works by adjusting your EXE files so they're stored on disk in a way that mimics how they'll be stored in RAM, when you run them. (Many EXEs are shipped pre-aligned, but this tool can take care of the rest). Once the EXEs are aligned, MapCache (which runs automatically as part of Win98) then can operate at top efficiency.

If you have the full $70 Win98 Resource Kit, you already have a copy of WinAlign and all the supporting information you need to use it.

For everyone else, Windows Magazine offers a free tool called WMalign that can do much the same thing as WinAlign, except it won't cost you $70. (GRIN)

When does the next century and the new millenium start? If you listen to many of our elected officials, high paid executives, religious leaders, and media moguls, you would think that January 1, 2000 is the first day of the new century and the new millenium. At a recent high school graduation, a superintendent (no names) twice stated that the class of 1999 was the last class of the current millenium, and that the next graduating class, the class of 2000, will be the first of the new millenium. WRONG ! WRONG ! WRONG !

The new century and millenium STARTS on 1/1/2001, NOT 1/1/2000 !

Problems with CONEXANT\ROCKWELL chipset modems
Many of the newer Conexant\Rockwell chipset modems are "controlerless" or "winmodems". There are documented problems with the connection speed of many of these modems, and most cannot be used for online gaming, due to the demands put on the CPU, because controllerless modem lack their own microprocessor.

MOTOROLA chipset modems.
Also, many of the newer modems with MOTOROLA chipsets, often refered to as "Host Signal Processing (HSP)" modems, are controlerless as well.

A caller asked about a way to keep his modem from disconnecting as easily as it did when he was online. There is a method that works for SOME people, but NOT others:
You might want to go to MY COMPUTER - CONTROL PANEL - MODEMS - PROPERTIES - CONNECTIONS - ADVANCED where it says "EXTRA SETTINGS" enter (no spaces) S10=50
This gives the modem more time to automatically reestablish a connection, if the connection is lost.

REGISTRY

From: Exploring Windows(R) News - 1999, Issue No. 11

Windows 98 comes with a handy Registry maintenance tool called the Registry Checker. Each time you start your system, the Registry Checker automatically creates a backup of the Registry in the \Windows\Sysbckup folder. If you investigate that folder, you'll discover that Registry Checker actually keeps five backup copies of the Registry in compressed format as Rb001.cab, Rb002.cab, and so on.

You can manually back up the Registry any time you want. To do so, load the System Information utility
(Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools), pull down the Tools menu, and select Registry Checker. As soon as you do, the Registry Checker will scan your Registry for errors and then prompt you to make a backup. Click Yes to replace the oldest backup file with the new one.

If you ever find that you need to restore from a Registry backup, reboot your system to an MS-DOS prompt and then type Scanreg on the command line. Now, just follow the on-screen instructions to view your backed-up Registry files and restore the most recent one.
--------------------------------------
A utility, WinRescue95 and 98, that can automate the REGISTRY backup and repair functions is discussed in the APRIL 1 SHOW section, in this category, below.

START UP PROGRAM CONTROL

Updated April 14

There have been several recent questions about cleaning up the Windows START UP in order to sped loading and REDUCE CONFLICTS. A recent series of articles has excellent, detailed, and EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS:

FROM ZDNET:
ZDNET - CLEANING UP THE START UP

JESSE BERST'S GUIDE TO WIN98 TUNE UP

ANOTHER EASY WAY !
Only works on WIN98
SIMPLY click on START and RUN, and then type MSCONFIG and then OK
Check or uncheck the boxes as needed (but for safety sake, write down what you do so you can undo it!)

A LOT of callers have been having trouble with programs that start up automatically, but are often unnecessary, and slow the computer down, or create conflicts. There are MANY programs available that can make START UP programs easy to manage.

In WINDOWS 98 (NOT 95) this can be done by going to:
START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES - SYSTEM TOOLS - SYSTEM INFORMATION - TOOLS - SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY
This will bring up a window with a simple checklist; by checking or unchecking a box will enable or disable something from starting.

One of my favorites is StartEd at:
StartEd

For WINDOWS 95 (most also work on Windows 98 and NT), several other START UP CONTROL utilities,
and MANY other good utilities are available. Also look at the many REGISTRY REPAIR, and other beneficial utilities at this site.

RECEIVING MIME FILES ON AOL
Revised March 11

I have had several callers and emails asking how to enable MIME files on their AOL EMAIL. Since I am not an AOL subscriber, I could not access their web based tech support. I did however find some other links where some possible solutions may be available. If none of these resolve the MIME problem with AOL, then I would suggest that AOL users call AOL tech support on their 800 number, or AOL users can go to keyword "MIME" and download one of the files there
